Clara

Clara bought some pastries, a cup of tea for Tom and some coffee for herself, Bernhardt, and Elena at the coffee shop across from the library after the meeting. “Thank you all so much for coming. I don’t know how long our attorney will be able to keep that man from firing me.”

“Tom here insisted I come. I didn’t think I could help, but I am glad I could. Is there anything that can be done to get rid of that man?” Bernhardt took a bite of his bear claw.

“You were terrific. Thanks for thinking of bringing him, Tom.” She felt a rush of gratitude for this FBI agent, new in her life, who felt so essential.

When Bernhardt went to get another coffee to go, Elena walked up with him to the counter. “I wonder if those two will date,” Clara said.

“I’d like to go on a date with you.”

“I’d like that, too,” she said without thinking, then realized how much it was true. “I’d love it if you let me take you out for a nice dinner as a thank you for your help today. That was above and beyond your work.”

“I would do anything for you,” he said quietly, covering her hand with his.

She leaned in to kiss him right over the little café table. He put a hand on her cheek and she was completely lost to him, as if they were alone.

Eventually she realized Elena was clearing her throat next to them. She looked into the blue eyes of Tom, realizing his eyes had gone tiger.

“Should I meet you back at the library?” Elena was looking back up at the counter, and not at them.

“I’m going to work from home for the rest of the day. I’m not on a desk shift.”

“I’ll meet you both there, then,” Elena said.
